In the midst of all the excitement and entertainment that greets you at every Farmers Market, it's important to remember that the main goal of the market is to provide our region's farmers a place to connect directly with their customers. In other words, our primary focus is the food our farmers bring to sell.
The food at any farmers market is locally grown and in season. And the key to healthy eating is eating in-season, locally grown food... at least to the extent possible.
It's easy to forget about seasonal eating when there are supermarkets on every corner featuring foods shipped in from around the world. But if you care about health... yours, your family's, your community's and the earth's... then keep it local. And do your best to keep it seasonal.
Fruits and vegetables have their fullest flavor and nutrient content when they are grown in healthy soil, picked ripe, and eaten soon after harvesting. You can only find freshness this good at your local Farmers Market.
Eating a good variety of high-quality, nutrient -rich fruits and vegetable in an important part of taking care of our health, our environment, and our families.
Flavorful Greens Dozens of different greens and fresh herbs can be found at the farmers markets, loaded with an impressive range of vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidents - and delicious flavors. Arugula, for example, is a nutty, spicy leaf excellent raw in salads and sandwiches - with a whopping 7,400 IU's of vitamin A per 3.5oz serving (compare iceberg lettuce with 33 IU's of vitamin A per serving.) Greens can be eaten in soups, steamed, sauteed, baked in casseroles, omelets or gratins, added to pastas to topped on pizzas. Local farmers grow dozens of different greens, including kale, chard, collard, mustard and bok choy. Many farmers also sell their own special salad and braising mixes, some with edible flowers (also high in nutrients).
